Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has started its activities in Italy in 1999 when realized that the same persons cured and assisted in countries at thousands of kilometers of distance were the same encountered in precarious conditions and needs once in Italy. The activities developed during these last years have aimed to give medical and psychological assistance to migrant people, even undocumented, present inItaly.
At the beginning of 2017, MSF is running a project of assistance for the Victims of Torture in Rome, a mental health program in Trapani, a psychological first aid (PFA) support to migrants on the move (MotM) in Como and Ventimiglia (including sexual reproductive health activity ). Msf also plans to increment post-hospitalization activities in Catania.
Thes new intervention of MSF for “Migrants on the Move” (Motm) in Como and Ventimiglia intends to address the humanitarian and medical needs of the mobile population excluded from the formal reception system, by rolling out a significant and rapid scale-up of the MSF operationalresponse.. According to the needs encountered during assessments, MSF will implement activities, according to identified needs in every spot, of: medical screening and medical activities, epidemiological survey, Psychological First Aid (PFA), watsan/shelter/NFI and support to civil society(trainings, etc.).
The teams, intended mobile, are presently intervening in Como and Ventimiglia.
Main Purpose
Provide support to migrants on movement with the objective to improve their psychosocial
welfare.
Accountabilities:
Main Activities
Emotional support (small groups or individuals)-Psycological first aid (PFA) support
Through an ‘active listening’, to support migrants to rebuild a sense of self-efficacy. This activity can
be carried out in different modalities:
- Psychological support
- Provide, in some specific cases and when pertinent (identified persons during the group or individual activity), a short term psylogical support ,
- Follow up: refer to National health system (ATS)- Psychological Service, people who will stay in the Italian territory for a middle- term or long term and would beneficiate of a psychologist support;
- Identification of the most vulnerable/stressed people. To identify people with special needs (women, unaccompanied children, families, elders, and people with severe medical / psychological diseases).
- Practical assistance & information (in collaboration with the cultural mediators)
- Support for basic needs and provision of general information
- Information about health care rights
- Basic legal information
- Family Links. Connect people with other family members or friends. For example, contacting hospitals to search out for family members who were hospitalized at landing…etc.
Education/training
- Degree in Psychology with registration to the Italian” psychologist albo”
Experience
• Essential working experience in European migration fields/contexts
• Essential working experience as psychologist, of at least two years in relevant similar jobs in other NGO’s or previous field experience with MSF in different contexts.
- Desirable psychotherapist qualification
Languages
• Proficient in English (minimum C1) as working language
• Proficient in Italian (minimum C1)
Computer Skills
• Computer literacy (word, excel and internet)
